While it may seem like growing a beard should be a thoughtless process, there’s a little more to the process than just letting your facial hair grow wild. At least if you’d like to achieve a well-groomed beard, that is. Styling your beard.

Before growing out your beard, it’s best to choose a style you’d like to work toward. Knowing the shape of your face can assist in deciding on one. Certain styles will complement your face best. Here’s some basics to help find the beard that works best for you.

If the width and length of your face are almost the same, you have a round face. To achieve the illusion of a leaner face, have your beard length longer at the chin. You’ll also want your sideburns and the sides of your beard kept short. A goatee also looks well with this face shape.

The long face has a long, lean face, with or without a prominent chin. You’ll look best with a beard that is fuller at the sides and short at the chin. This will give you the appearance of a wider, yet shorter face. You’ll want to be sure that the different lengths fade together, so they aren’t obvious.

Small goatee styles

A square face has a prominent jawline. The forehead, cheekbones and jawline are relatively the same width. The goal is to add length to the face. This can be achieved by having a beard with shorter sides and more length at the chin. Goatee’s also complements this face shape well, you’ll want it to be more round than square.

If you have an oval face, then you are blessed with the ideal face shape. You’ll be able to choose any style as your facial features are already well balanced. Go ahead and mix it up!

Chosen a style yet? Great! Now it’s time to grow it out. Hairs grow at different rates, so remember to be patient.
