So, in this article, we will discuss various beard styles which you can choose from depending on the shape of your face. How to select beard style.
By following the guide below, you can ensure that you will end up with a perfect looking beard which will not only suit you but be the envy of lots of bearded guys who think that growing a beard is just a matter of growing facial hair.
Make Sure You Have the Time to Allow Your Facial Hair to Grow
The first thing you need to do is to ensure that you have the time and can make the commitment to allow your facial hair to grow. After all, you can’t really start styling your beard until you have one to style. Unfortunately, this takes a while, and during the time your beard is growing out enough to style, you are going to look a bit scruffy and unkempt.
This may be fine for you, but you need to consider whether or not this growing out phase may have an adverse effect on your career or your employer. In some cases, you may have to wait until vacation time rolls around before attempting to grow enough facial hair to create any style of beard at all.
Consider Having a Professional To Style Your Beard the First Time
Once you have managed to avoid those scissors, clippers, trimmers and shavers for a long enough time to actually style a beard of the type you have chosen, then consider seeking professional help for that very first styling.
There is nothing worse than spending weeks growing out your beard, only to cut too much off when you attempt to style it, and have to begin the entire process again. Once a professional has styled your beard, it is simple and easy to keep that same style yourself at home.
Here is an educational video done by a professional on creating various styles so that you can see which one may suit you best. I recommend you to watch the video.
Choose the Right Style for Your Face
Let’s face it, a beard can be a man’s best friend or one of his worst enemies. It can be used to enhance your best features and to help disguise those features that are less attractive. However, you need to choose the best beard styling to fit the shape of your face in order for your beard to be successful.
The above video and the next one were done in two parts with the following one talking about some more modern styles. It is again done by a very capable professional lady who really knows what she is talking about. I have learnt quite a few tips from her and tried different styles some of which were great and others made me look like.. ( let´s not get into that ) So, if you have some spare time, do watch this video, too. There is a lot in it to learn about how to style your beard.
You see the same face in both the videos but they were done with a gap of one year.

The Best Beards style for the Shape of Your Face
The Long Narrow Face
If you have a long narrow face, then the best style is a beard that keeps the hair on your chin to a minimum length.
The longer the beard, the more long your face will tend to look. So, keep that hair in the chin area shorter to help make your face look a little shorter as well. Long narrow faces often look good with a bit of 5 o’clock shadow or two day grown on the lower half of their face.
Stubble styling softens up that long narrow look, making your face look a bit shorter and a little bit fuller.
The Round Face
Many round faced men feel that having a long full beard will elongate their face. Nothing could be further from the truth. Long full beards with bushy side burns will only make your face look more round or at least heavier.
Round face fellows should avoid the full beard look and choose instead a nice goatee styling that helps to narrow the face at the sides and make it slightly longer. Having a mustache that meets your goatee and doesn’t extend past the corners of your mouth will give your entire face a somewhat narrow look.
Square Face
Square faced fellows have a strong jaw line, however in some cases that jaw line is a little too strong, making some men want to soften their appearance just a bit.
The best way to soften that jaw line is to choose an all over beard that is clipped close to the face. This softens the bottom of your face giving it a slightly more rounded look.
Short Face, Pointed Chin
Some men have a short face with a pointed narrow chin, giving their face a more trianglar look than they would like. In this case, a full beard styling that extends a bit beyond your face can give your chin a more rounded look and make your face appear somewhat longer at the same time.
However, make sure that the part of the beard that goes beyond the chin is rounded at the bottom and not pointed, or the pointed chin look will remain.
Pointed Chin, Longer Face
Men who have long narrower faces with a pointed chin, aren’t going to benefit from a longer full beard. While the full beard may round out their chin a bit, it will make their face appear even longer.
The best beard styling for the longer face with a pointed chin is a nice goatee styling, perhaps even a Van Dyke, to give the chin a more rounded appearance while helping to keep the face from looking narrower.
Rectangular Face
Men who have a rectangular face often want to soften their jaw line while giving their face a less elongated look. A beard can do that beautifully if you choose a style such as a chin curtain or a short box beard.
Not Sure Which Beard Type is Right For Your Face?
If you are not sure what the shape of your face is or if you have a combination face that is not wholely one shape or another, and want to know what type of beard may look best for you, then you can always play around with that weekend stubble to get a general idea of beard types.
So, just let your facial hair grow out over the weekend and then Monday, before shaving, try styling a shape that you think might look good on you. Of course, you will have to use your imagination to fill in for fuller beard styles, but it will give you a rough idea of how much or how little of your face should actually be covered by facial hair.
The really great thing about beard styling is that you can try one style for a while and if you don’t like it, shave it all off and begin again. While most men keep the same beard style year after year, there are those who do their beard styles almost with the changing of the seasons. It really is all about following some useful beard styling tips to find what works best for you.
