Before you grow a beard, it is best to know how to find the right style for your face. Properly trimmed and shaped facial hair can go a long way to enhance your most desirable facial features and take the emphasis off aspects you don't particularly enjoy.
Choosing the right beard shape for your face will depend on a few factors. While each face has its own special considerations like the size of your mouth, nose, and jawline, there are some general rules you can follow to find the appropriate beard for you.
The Round Face
When shaping the beard for a round face, go a bit longer at the chin to add length and make the face appear less round. Avoid bushy sideburns and keep the sides of your beard short.
In lieu of a full beard, a goatee is often a good option for a round face. The idea here is to make your face appear leaner. Stick with an elongated beard shape with closely cropped sides and more length at the chin.

The Long Face
The exact opposite of a round face, the long face requires a beard which is fuller at the sides and shorter at the chin. The goal here is to add width to the sides and make your face appear less long.
Make sure to avoid abrupt changes in length so the shaping is not obvious. A good barber can show you how to trim and shape your beard.
The Square Face
Similar to shaping a beard for a round face, the beard for a square face should be shorter at the sides and longer at the chin to add length to the face.
Once again, a goatee is a good option for men with square faces. It is also a good idea to keep the beard shape a bit rounder at the bottom and not too square.
The Large Face
Since the face is large, any small facial hair or beard will appear out of proportion and make your face appear bigger. Keep the beard fuller and the mustache larger.
Also, follow the rules above for your face shape.
The Small Face
Small faces require small facial hair. Larger, fuller styles will make your face get lost and appear out of proportion. Don't forget to follow the rules above for your appropriate face shape.
The Oval Face
You lucky man! The oval face shape is considered the ideal shape and requires no special shaping to balance facial features. Do whatever you like and you'll look great.

The nice thing about beards is that you can switch up your style rather quickly if you're not happy. A quick shave or the avoidance of one can easily give you a clean palette to work with.
If you're really stuck and are looking to make a change, head to your barber or stylist and ask them for advice. They might even know you well enough by now to understand your personal concerns and give you a new facial hair style to work with at home.
