Grooming at the Globes

For an awards show coming back from strike-induced hiatus, the 66th annual Golden Globes were fairly tame — except for the occasional mustache, cheek scruff, and wildebeest beard spotted on the red carpet. Team Slumdog wasn't that cute, after all.

We asked two experts — Shawn Cornacchio, head barber at Paul Labrecque Salon &, Spa, and Eric Malka, CEO of The Art of Shaving — to weigh in on a particularly grizzly Sunday evening in Beverly Hills. What follows isn't a Best Bearded breakdown so much as a way to turn your bathroom into, well, more than a sink and a shave.

Paul Giamatti, John Adams

The Look Grown-out sideburns turned fluffy upper-cheek hair (aka "pork chops").

Does It Work? The Elvis-Bozo combo actually fits the balding Giamatti, but only because of the hair he has left. Try those burns with a shorter 'do, Malka says, and the entire look changes. Plus, Giamatti's pointed face isn't conducive to a beard, which would just elongate his features. He neeeded some rounding up, which he achieves well here.

How You Get It Cornacchio says you'll want a shaver (like one from Panasonic ) to manage the burns in between bi-weekly barber visits.

Darren Aronofsky, The Wrestler

The Look To wear a mustache, one must walk a delicate line: You can either look like a 70s porn star or, as Aronofsky has achieved here, a movie director with 1930s style. "It's very classic, especially with that suit he's wearing," Malka, the director of The Wrestler says.

Does It Work? In this case, yes, but only thanks to serious preparation. The key, Malka says, is not to let the 'stache grow over your upper lip.

A mustache trimmer makes for good maintenance, but to get the look straight from home, Malka suggests a mustache razor to trim around the lines and to paint sharp edges.

Sean Combs, A Raisin in the Sun

The Look "It's never smooth on the road of life," the artist formerly known as Puffy once riffed. But aside from this goatee and thin mustache, this face is all baby-soft.

Does It Work? Perfection. Both experts say Combs's oval head is made for this style, which gives him a more defined chin by narrowing the bottom half of his face. When you're on-hand representing A Raisin in the Sun, refinement helps.

How You Get It Cornacchio recommends going to a barber shop for a look this top-notch, especially if your hair has similar texture to the Diddy.

Brad Pitt, The Curious Case...

The Look This well-groomed goatee, which Pitt has been sporting in one form or another since the Benjamin Button awards campaign began, helps to elongate his round face, Malka says.

Does it Work? Yes. Cornacchio explains that Pitt followed the natural growth of his jaw line, giving him a soft shape and friendly appearance.

How You Get It Malka suggests heading to a barber, then going DIY: Use a small mustache razor like this one from Art of Shaving to keep lip hair trim, then learn how to use a straight razor for the cheeks (try Hommage ). Angelina Jolie not included.

Ricky Gervais, The Office

The Look A meticulously groomed goatee that, according to Malka, was a style popular in the '90s.

Does It Work? Malka says Gervais looks dated and undistinguished. As far as we're concerned, he can keep the regional-manager chin as long as he keeps up boozy riffs like the one on Sunday. Gervais said it himself: "How rude are you lot? Just 'cause you're film stars....I'm like staff."

How You Get It For a smooth glide along the cheeks and the cleanest upkeep of this no-scruff goatee — daily attention is key, Malka says — try the Art of Shaving's Power Razor.

Mickey Rourke,The Wrestler

The Look An exaggerated, thinned mustache extending well past the width of the lip, with a slightly visible chinstrap connected to a goatee tuft.

Mens fashion beard styles

Does It Work? Our experts diverge on Rourke's 80s-burnout-meets-best-actor-shoo-in vibe. Cornacchio says Rourke's personality lets him get away with it, while Malka feels a thicker mustache and more defined goatee might have reinforced the Mick's comeback.

How You Get It Malka recommends an electric shaver set to low for a thin 'stache, plus shaving oil to expose the hair lines.

Colin Farrell, In Bruges

The Look A mustache paired with a "soul patch" (or the less-70s "flavor saver," as Cornacchio puts it), that tuft of hair meticulously manicured below the lip.

Does It Work? Yes. Despite not having shaved for a few days to perfect the look of a bad boy (or ex-bad boy, or whatever he meant by that cocaine joke onstage), Farrell blended the 'stache, patch, and chinstrap well against all that scruff, Cornacchio says.

How You Get It With scruff comes dryness, so Cornacchio recommends diligent use of lotion and, when in front of the mirror, a face wash to remove dirt from between skin and razor.

Steve Carell, The Office

The Look A carefully groomed beard with excess hair removed and fine lines along the neck and cheeks.

Does It Work? Absolutely. It's a beard without baggage, Malka beams, improving Carell's look from geeky boss and past gloomy Little Miss Sunshine philosopher to groomy nominee.

How You Get It After a few days of growth, Cornacchio says you need to determine the length you like then keep it there. Figure out where your line is from the bottom of the chin along your jaw, and learn to use an electric shaver to keep it trim and proper. Try shave gels when you need a sharper eye.

Ari Folman, Waltz with Bashir

The Look A goatee grown into a traditional mustache and beard, manicured tight along the jaw line and thicker in the chin.

Mens fashion beard styles

Does It Work? Yes. The well-trimmed side accentuates Folman's already strong profile, says Cornacchio, giving him a distinguished look. Makes sense for a guy who spent four years animating a documentary.

How You Get It Grow out a goatee first, then let the hair fill in the cheeks, mustache, and chin. To prevent scruffiness in the meantime, Malka advises, trim hair regularly to maintain thickness.
