While the man bun is a global hairstyle, it can certainly be customized to one’,s own preferences and tastes. A man bun is simply a bun that is placed on the vertex area of the head (i.e. the crown), although even it’,s positioning can be moved about on the head (higher or lower) as in the case of the low man bun hairstyle! Types of beard styles.
As a barber who too has a man bun, I get a lot of questions from my barbershop customers about getting a man bun and about growing hair long. I’,ve gone as far as publishing a popular man bun hairstyle guide that has all the information that you need on the man bun and which too touches upon the different types of manbuns. So, considering that the manbun is a hairstyle that leaves a lot to the imagination, I want to now dedicate this guide that you’,re reading to covering all the types of man buns.
These are the 7 main types of man buns for men:
Let’,s now continue this guide and go through them all in detail!
Full man bun
The full man bun is what one would consider the mother of all manbuns. All the hair on the head (including sides and back of the head) is used to tie a single bun, which is then placed on the crown area of the head. The minimum hair length needed for the full man bun is 10 inches, although I recommend that you have at least 12 inches of hair length to avoid pulling your hair too tight, which can then lead to hair loss.
The full man bun is quite a popular hairstyle with hipsters, who will not think twice about combining the man bun with a beard for quite a dapper hairstyle. The full man bun has become so popular that male celebrities such as Harry Styles, Chris Hemsworth and Joaquin Phoenix have too used this type of man bun style.
Semi man bun aka top knot hairstyle
The semi man bun is a type of man bun that only uses the hair on the top of the head. The semi bun does not use the hair on the sides and back of the head, thus, because the semi bun only uses one third of the head’,s hair, the bun is smaller than the one that can be achieved with a full man.
The resulting bun from the hair on a semi bun is also known as a top knot hairstyle. This type of man bun has also become quite popular as one can achieve a semi bun or top knot in only a couple of months stating from a short length of hair. In fact, the minimum hair length needed to get a topknot is 6 inches, which can take you only 3 to 10 months to achieve depending on how short your hair is when you start growing it out for your topknot.
All types of beard styles
With that said, I still recommend to my barbershop customers to have at least 8 inches of hair length before wearing a top knot hairstyle. This type of man bun style can place an enormous amount of tension on your hairline, which can lead to traction alopecia and speed up male pattern baldness (if you are were unfortunate enough to suffer from traction alopecia).
Just as with the full man bun, the semi bun has been used by male celebrities such as Zayn Malik.
The ponybun is a hairstyle that is half a bun and half a ponytail. Purists would argue that the ponybun is a hairstyle on its own and not a type of man bun, but I believe that including the ponybun under the man bun types is also correct as the ponybun is done by following the steps to get a man bun and then leaving some of the tied hair dangling in a tail (i.e. ponytail) instead of being choked in the bun.
A male celebrity known for wearing a ponybun hairstyle was Jared Leto, prior to chopping off his long hair.
The low manbun is a type of man bun style that is placed lower on the head than the regular man bun. Only full man buns can be placed lower than the regular crown area of the head. Semi buns or topknots cannot be placed lower than the vertex area of the head as the hair below this area is too short to tie it in the actual topknot bun.
The low manbun has been a male hairstyle that has been used for centuries. Prior to the manbun trend of placing the bun on the vertex, men had been tying their hair low on the back of the head for many, many years. However, to be able to tie a full man bun low on the back of the head you will need an even longer hair length than with the regular full man bun: a minimum hair length of 12 inches will be needed!
High manbun aka pineapple hairstyle
Just as we have the low manbun, we too have the high manbun! As you would imagine, the high manbun style involves the placing of your bun higher than the vertex area. The usual positioning for the high manbun is the center of the top of the head.
Because of the overall pineapple-like appearance of a high man bun, the high manbun is also known as a pineapple hairstyle. Since the hair is tied on the center of the head, you don’,t need as much hair length as with the low manbun. Thus, you can tie a pineapple hairstyle with just 6 inches of hair length, and you can do it whether you can also wear a full man bun or a semi man bun.
It should be said that the aesthetics of a high manbun isn’,t quite as awesome as the aesthetics of the other types of manbuns. Actually, let’,s be honest, you will look like a clown if you wear a pineapple hairstyle. However, it’,s a great hairstyle to tie your long hair before going to sleep so as to wake up with tangle-free hair!
Man bun undercut
The man bun undercut is also known as a top knot undercut. The hair on the sides and back of the head is buzzed in an undercut haircut, which then keeps the hair extremely short and thus augments the aesthetics of your man bun. In essence, a man bun undercut is a semi bun, although there are other types of haircuts for the semi bun than just the undercut (see the next type of man bun).
Depending on how long you leave the hair on the top of your head to be, your man bun will be bigger or smaller. On the other hand, I highly recommend that you get your undercut haircut for the sides and back of the head with a very-short hair clipper length. For a man bun undercut haircut, you will want a hair clipper length ranging from a number 0 to a number 3 clipper length, nothing more (as it otherwise breaks the aesthetics of the whole manbun undercut hairstyle!).
Man bun taper cut
The man bun taper cut has the sides and back of the head tapered in length. The most aesthetic taper haircut for this type of man bun is a short hair clipper taper. What this means is that you will only use a hair clipper to taper the hair on the sides and back, which then results in having a very-short length in these areas of the head.
A popular taper haircut as of lately is the mid contour haircut, also known as an executive contour haircut. Another cool type of haircut that has a tapered shape is the 2 step undercut, whereby you create two layers of cut hair on the sides and back of the head instead of the single hair layer created with a regular undercut!
