Walgreens contacted police at about 3:41 pm on July 17 to report the incident that occurred at about 6 pm on July 3.
Police said that a man entered the drug store and bought two bottles of Gatorade sports drink with a $100 bill. After that transaction, the man produced another $100 bill and asked the cashier to provide him with smaller bills in exchange for that $100 bill, after which the cashier did so.

The man then left the store in an older white Dodge Charger with darkly-tinted windows. Police estimate the vehicle’s model year at between 2006 and 2010. Also, the vehicle has body damage to a door on its lower left side. The auto has plastic tail lamp covers. Police think the auto’s rear marker plate may be an older blue-and-white New York State plate.
Police described the man who passed the counterfeit bills as being black, about six feet tall, with a stocky build, short black hair, and a closely shaved beard and mustache. The man was wearing black sweatpants and a blue hoodie-style sweatshirt with the hood up.
Similar passage of counterfeit $100 bills has occurred in Shelton, Derby, Ansonia, Trumbull, Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Brookfield.
Police refer such counterfeit bill incidents to the US Secret Service, which investigates counterfeiting. Newtown police ask anyone with information on the July 3 incident at Walgreens to contact police Officer Felicia Figol at 203-426-5841.
