From pop culture trend to business opportunity, it’s all in the beard
Pop culture has gotten hairy. Well at least its face has. Beards and facial hair of all sorts has become the in trend, over the past few years. Bearded styles have always been part and parcel of the Indian identity, with intellectuals like Rabindranath Tagore, Dadabhai Nowrojee and several others having flaunted one over a hundred years ago. Face dadhi style.
While the Beatles ditched their clean shaven mop tops for the rugged Grizzly Adams look, India, thanks to Bollywood, remained clean shaved. Superstars Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan (who ironically sports one of the most iconic French beards today) persisted with the ‘well groomed’ (read hairless) look throughout.
However, thanks to Ranveer Singh’s bearded character from ‘Bajirao Mastani’ actually walked away with the top acting honours. In fact Varun Dhawan’s vengeful hubby character from ‘Badlapur’ was another bearded contender, for the top spot. Where Bollywood blazes the trail, sports and music can’t be far behind. In fact almost any iconic player or musician in the Indian context today, be it Virat Kohli in cricket or rapper Badshah in music are all bearded. If that isn’t a sea change, we wonder what is. Suddenly, having a beard isn’t a detriment at all, it is the new norm.
Tips to sport a beard the right way
Bearded men seem to be hogging the spotlight these days. Obviously then being a man, you wouldn’t want to miss out on the attention. So here are a few tips, on how to grow, maintain and style a beard.
New beard shape
The right style: A beard is meant to augment your face and therefore must suit your face cut. Choose a style that does just this. For instance if you have a rounder, chubbier face, go in for a French beard, which will augment your jawline. If you have a chiseled, angular face however, you might want to explore a full beard to add some volume to your face.
Growing a beard: The growth face is the tricky part. Always keep your face and your beard moisturized. Wash your beard often and use a good quality oil to hydrate it.
Maintaining a beard: Always get your beard trimmed every few weeks, go to a salon and ask a stylist to trim away the excess hair. Look for a good beard wax to keep your beard in line and well groomed.
Conditioning is key: At the end of the day, wash your face with a good beard wash, in order to keep it soft and manageable.
Comb away the tangles: Get yourself a quality wooden beard comb to detangle your beard and keep it in check.
